The Eligibility Premium Arrives
Fees for stars in domestic-eligible situations jump +38% in a single window. Clubs discover their best players are now national infrastructure: selling a winger abroad doesn't just weaken the team, it disarms the country. La Liga's big two quietly agree to sell nothing to the Premier League before June 2028; the collusion inquiry is opened, shrugged at, and closed.
Mid-table clubs feast. Any club holding a star's registration on snapshot day holds a nation hostage — and prices accordingly.

Agents Invent the Dual-Window Clause
The contract innovation of the decade: transfers agreed in spring that legally complete on 2 June 2028 — one day after the eligibility snapshot. A player can be sold abroad and play the Home Leagues Cup for his league's nation first. FIFA calls it "against the spirit of the competition." Agents call it Tuesday.
By deadline day, forty-one dual-window deals are lodged. The snapshot becomes football's new fiscal year.

Ligue 1's Longest Summer
Nine France internationals leave in one window — the exodus the rule was always going to accelerate. Why stay eligible for France when Madrid pays double and makes you Spanish-for-a-summer? PSG holds its Champions-League-winning core together by force of wage bill, and France's entire tournament hope becomes a single club with a flag draped over it.
The federation president calls an emergency summit. It is poorly attended; most invitees were at their unveilings.

Title Races, Bent Out of Shape
Domestic championships warp under the new physics. The Bundesliga run-in is decided by rotation policy — Bayern rest their eligibility-critical stars for six weeks while Dortmund, chasing the title with nothing to protect, run theirs into the ground. Serie A's spring is consumed by the "Keep Yildiz" campaign, a nationwide effort to prevent one Turkish playmaker from being sold before snapshot day.
Two leagues open investigations into deliberate non-selling. Both conclude that hoarding your own employees is, awkwardly, legal.

The Snapshot Final
The Champions League final lands three days before the eligibility snapshot — and becomes the strangest showpiece in memory. Both finalists field players whose transfers are signed, sealed and post-dated; one goalscorer celebrates in front of fans he has technically already left. Madrid win the cup and lose nine transfer targets in the same week, as selling clubs refuse to close anything until their stars have played a Home Leagues group stage.
UEFA, watching clubs plan around another body's tournament, is described by one executive as "quietly furious, which is to say: furious."

Snapshot Day
At 23:59 UTC the registries freeze. Sixteen national squads crystallise out of league spreadsheets: England's XI contains six foreign-born starters and nobody blinks; Germany's is led by an Englishman; the United States will be captained by a 41-year-old Argentine. France's golden generation watches from sixteen different countries.
The draw is in four days. The papers have never sold better.
